In 1630, Chhatrapati Shivaji began observing Ganesh Chaturthi as a family tradition in Maharashtra. It gained popularity during the Peshwas' reign and in 1893, Lokmanya Tilak revived it as a public celebration to foster unity among citizens. Today, this festival is celebrated in unique ways in different cities.
To many who celebrate, Ganesh Chaturthi is synonymous with modaks, a rice and dal-based dumpling that’s believed to be the elephant God’s favourite. They’re certainly ours! Ingredients for the dough:
- 1 cup rice flour
- 1/2 cup semolina
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- Water, as needed
Ingredients for the filling:
- 1 cup grated coconut
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder
Instructions:
- To make the dough, combine the rice flour, semolina, and salt in a large bowl.
- Add water gradually, mixing until the dough comes together and forms a soft ball.
- Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.
- While the dough is resting, make the filling. In a medium bowl, combine the grated coconut, sugar, and cardamom powder.
- Mix well and set aside.
- To assemble the modaks, divide the dough into small balls.
- Roll out each ball into a thin circle.
- Place a spoonful of the filling in the center of the circle.
- Bring the edges of the dough together to form a pleat.
- Continue pleating the dough until you reach the top.
- Pinch the top of the dough to seal the modak.
- Repeat steps 6-11 with the remaining dough and filling.
- To steam the modaks, place them in a steamer basket lined with banana leaves.
- Steam the modaks for 15-20 minutes, or until cooked through.
- Serve the modaks hot or warm.
Tips:
- To make the modaks easier to assemble, dust the dough with a little bit of flour before rolling it out.
- If you don't have a steamer basket, you can steam the modaks in a pan of boiling water.
- To check if the modaks are cooked through, insert a toothpick into the center. If the toothpick comes out clean, the modaks are done.
